If that fluid was flammable and killed engine same as opening throttle, CDI box probably is bad not advancing.

If you have the spark checker that goes in-line with the spark plug, it will tell you if the spark drops out when it it revved.  (Mine has a neon bulb in it and goes in series with the spark plug lead.  Does it by chance have a safety switch in the throttle circuit that kills the engine?  I had a banshee with the TORS system that would kill spark if the throttle lever went to idle but the carb didn't.

I think the idea of running the engine with fuel sprayed into the air box is a brilliant way to check the carb, nice thinking!

If after checking spark drop out you find that that isnt the issue I'd be looking at the carb slide cutaway. Are you sure this carb is for a 4 stroke application?

Got a can of starter fluid and it still killed the engine.  Took the CDI box off and saw.... a melted corner!  At some point it had been resting on the exhaust.  New one on order.  $4.99 on Ebay.

And now it gets weird.

The CDI box off Ebay was *identical* in every way as the original.  It was advertised at a CDI box for just about every Chinese pit bike on the market.

When it's installed the darn thing won't even start!

Put the original back on and it fires up but still nothing over idle.

WTF?

New coil.  Nada.  New spark plug.  Zilch.

Maybe the replacement CDI is junk.  It will still start up with the old one.  Nothing at all with the new.

What about the parts under the flywheel?

I know this may sound crazy, but I was dumb and this happened to me.

Make sure the slide is not in upside down/backwards.

My R3 wouldn't run right when I bought it, "rebuilt carbs" by the guy I bought it from but he couldn't get it to run right. When I rebuilt the carbs I just put the slides back in how they came out, not even paying attention. Turns out they were upside down. I struggled with everything you are dealing with too, same exact problems.

Tried troubleshooting spark, fuel, air, literally everything. Starter fluid, all that. Couldn't figure it out, took it to a mechanic and he realized pretty quick when he took the carbs off that the slides were wrong.

Try flipping the slides haha.

Brake cleaner is weird stuff, and shouldn't be burned from what I have heard.

Right, it's not flammable.
